About Me
Hi, I’m Jess! I'm an NCTJ trainee journalist currently completing my Level 5 Diploma in Darlington while living in Newcastle. I studied English Literature with Creative Writing at undergraduate level, which shaped my love of storytelling and sharpened my eye for detail.
Alongside my training in shorthand, media law and essential reporting skills, I’ve actively sought out opportunities to learn from leading voices in the industry. I’ve attended a range of journalism webinars, including sessions on reporting major incidents, where I had the opportunity to engage with experienced editors such as Sarah Lester at the Manchester Evening News and Eoin Brannigan, Editor-in-Chief of the Belfast Telegraph and Sunday Life. Hearing first-hand how newsrooms respond under pressure strengthened my interest in responsible, accurate reporting.
I was also invited by the NCTJ to represent my accredited course centre at the Financial Times in London - an experience that gave me valuable insight into national journalism and the standards expected at the highest level of the industry.
During my work experience at Teesside Live, I shadowed Editor Felicity Collinson, I attended both Crown Court hearings and council meetings and wrote my own court report, utilising my skills gained from my understanding of shorthand and media law in the UK. Being in those rooms — where decisions are made and lives are impacted - reinforced why local journalism matters and confirmed my ambition to report with clarity, fairness and integrity.
I’m particularly interested in court reporting and sports, as well as relaying how unique every community is through the power of journalism! From the intensity of a courtroom to the energy of a matchday, I'm passionate about telling stories that inform, engage and reflect the people at their heart.
